The Center for Religion and Environment (CRE) at the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., will host a climate justice conference from April 2-4, 2024.

The event, “Transforming Climates: Preaching Environmental Justice,” will look at how preaching changes when “colonialist and exploitative” conceptions of humanity break down. There will be small group workshops and lectures structured to help participants develop tools for an approach to preaching that can invite transformation of racial and environmental injustices, organizers said.

The CRE seeks to advance interdisciplinary dialogue, scholarship, and community engagement around meaning, value, ecology and conservation. The center is led by Andrew R. H. Thompson, who is Assistant Professor of Theological Ethics at the School of Theology at the University of the South. His work focuses on environmental ethics and eco-theology, especially around environmental racism and colonialism. His first book, Sacred Mountains: A Christian Ethical Approach to Mountaintop Removal, is about the debate over surface mining in his home region of Appalachia. According to the center’s website, Thompson is currently working on a book on whiteness in Christian environmentalism, tentatively titled Reconsider the Lilies: Challenging Christian Environmentalism’s Colonial Legacy, and a theological reflection on trees (conceived as an “unsystematic tree-ology”).
